Everything here is for the cold half of the year, and most of it is wool.

Start with the feet

Nesna Lobben felt boots — huopikkaat in the Norwegian tradition, boiled wool with a moulded non-slip sole. Made for standing still in dry cold: the yard, the school run, snowshoeing, the sledding hill. Adult and children's sizes.

Then the child

Zezuzulla jumpsuits — a waterproof winter jumpsuit with teddy lining for the pram and the hill, and a cotton jumpsuit for the weeks in between or as a layer underneath.

And the layer underneath

This is the layer that decides whether a winter day works. Thin merino under a snowsuit keeps a child warm without the sweat — and it is what goes into the car seat, where a padded suit should not.

And the car seat, which most people forget

A bulky winter suit should not go inside a car seat harness. The padding compresses in a collision and leaves the straps loose — so the safe way is to strap the child in wearing thin layers, then put the warmth on top.

One honest note about wool

Wool felt is made for dry cold, not slush. On a wet, hovering-around-zero day, choose rubber. On a clear cold day nothing beats it.
