Floor Beds for Children

A floor bed sits low to the ground so a child can climb in and out without help. It is one of the simplest ways to bring Montessori principles into a bedroom, and from around six months it is a safer alternative to a cot a child has started climbing out of.

What to check before you buy

  • Slatted base. Air has to circulate under the mattress. A mattress laid straight on the floor collects moisture — a real problem in Nordic homes.
  • No gaps. The mattress should match the frame exactly, with no space a small arm or leg could slip into.
  • A firm mattress, 10–15 cm thick. Not soft foam.
  • A size that lasts. 80 × 160 cm suits a toddler; 80 × 200 cm carries through to the school years.
  • European manufacture, so EU safety and chemical rules apply.
