Balance Board with Felt Base – Quiet Montessori Rocker, 2 Sizes

The same curved wooden rocker board, with a layer of soft grey felt across the underside. The felt does three things, and all three matter more in a flat than they sound.

• It protects the floor. No bare plywood edge dragging across parquet or laminate.
• It quietens the rocking. A wooden board on a hard floor knocks with every swing. Felt absorbs it — which is the difference between a board that gets used in the evening and one that does not.
• It holds the board steadier. Felt grips a smooth floor far better than bare wood, so the board rocks instead of sliding out.

If your home has parquet, laminate or tile, or there are neighbours below, this is the version to buy. On a thick rug the difference is smaller and the plain-wood version is enough.

What the board itself does

Standing on a surface that moves forces constant small corrections from the ankles, the trunk and the inner ear — the balance system a child otherwise builds outdoors, and that gets very little practice indoors through the dark months.

In play it is rarely used as a board. It becomes a bridge, a boat, a slide, a tunnel, a cradle, a stage. That open-endedness is why it stays in use for years rather than weeks.

Which size

Size S has a gentle 125 mm arch for a child finding their feet from around a year old. Size M has a steeper 170 mm arch — more movement, more uses, and it carries an adult. If you are unsure, choose M: a child grows into it rather than out of it.
